High school students learn graphing and equations in math class.  But transferring and applying that knowledge into Physics class can be troublesome, since Physics uses variables, equations, and graphical analysis somewhat differently than students see in math class.

Graphing is one of several important multiple representations that can help students understand what is happening in Physics.  A solid foundation in understanding graphs will help students in both Math and Science, and related courses.

In this workshop, graphing techniques and analysis for Introductory Physics students (grades 9-12) will be demonstrated and discussed, along with common errors and misconceptions that students have.  Classroom and lab activities will be provided.

Note:  this is a “low-tech” workshop focusing mainly on teaching graphing techniques, analysis, and students’ areas of difficulty.  If there is interest, there can be a future follow-up workshop on using technology in graphing, as well as more advanced graphing concepts.   We will survey participants at the workshop to see the level of interest.

Bring a Math Colleague!  For this workshop, Physics teachers can bring a Math teacher colleague along to the workshop!  This will give an opportunity for you to coordinate instruction in both areas, and to discuss areas of commonality and differences in math/science courses, to support student learning in both.  If you bring a Math colleague, they do not have to join NJAAPT, but there is still a cost to attend the workshop as your guest.  (add them as a guest to your registration).

All participants will receive a Professional Development certificate.

There will be dynamic discussions and you will have materials well before school starts in September, to incorporate in your teaching!

Cost:   $20 per person

Space is limited for this workshop!  Register early!
